Technical difficulties/detached retina/ IRON MAN

Best selling author Corey Mitchell patiently waited  for his interview on the live internet broadcast of TRUE CRIME ANDon Outlaw Radio...and waited and waited and waited. While Corey waited, Matt Alan (producer) was ripping apaRt the Internet router.  Corey was finally on the air 40 mnutes late, and our other guest didnt make it on the air at all.  Luckily for Matt, we were back on the air in plenty of time for his show. Soooo.....I think we will invite Corey back again next week along with Dawn Mellen from After the FInish Line....i figure that if the first 40 minutes of your show doesnt get on the air, the audience doesn't stick around to enjoy the sounds of silence.

Oh, did I tell you that I went blind in one eye? Yep. No fun. Detatched retina. Emergency surgery supposedly will save my vision, but we dont know how much I'll have left for about six weeks.

Saw IRON MAN film tonight. Loved it.   Then we watched ANOTHER MOVIE...a very engrossing well made and clever indie production  called "FIRST SNOW." Go rent it!!

The Saint's "Birthday"

Today, May 12th, would have been Leslie Charteris' 101st birthday. Charteris was born in Singapore on May 12, 1907 as Leslie Charles Bowyer Yin.

Charteris was born to a Chinese father and an English mother. His father was a physician who claimed to be able to trace his lineage back to the emperors of the Shang Dynasty. Charteris became interested in writing at an early age, at one point creating his own magazine with articles, short stories, poetry, editorials, serials, and even a comic strip.

2008 is shaping up to be a great year for Leslie Charteris. Eighty years ago Charteris wrote and published the first of many stories about Simon Templar, alias The Saint. The Saint has appeared in various media, and it seems that this 80th anniversary of his creation is the one that people are latching on to -- rather than last year's centenary of the author, which pretty much everyone missed anyway.

The 80th anniversay plans include a new 2-hour TV pilot starring James Purefoy, re-releases of Charteris' books, some new audio CDs, and additional DVD releases around the world.

The sheer magnitude of the over 400 children that the court in San Angelo decided to keep in the state’s custody brings attention to an already overburdened system as it scrambles to serve these children.

The sad and overlooked fact is that these children represent less than one percent of the more than 47,000 children that were placed in the state’s custody last year due to evidence of abuse or neglect. Many have horrific and disturbing injuries.

THE SAINT IN FINLAND

The Saint paperback I wrote to tie-in with the Val Kilmer film was translated into Finnish. I didn't even hear about it until today. Does this mean I get more money? No.  Due to some quirk in my contract I don't make a cent off of foreign translations -- I am supposed to get four free copies of the book, and that's it. I never got even one free copy of the Finland edition.  I don't think it would be particularly wise from an author/publisher relationship perspective (despite this being my only book for Pocketbooks) to complain about it.   If you read Finnish, get the book and tell me if it is anything like the original.

More than 150 authors are anticipated. Exhibitors include small independent bookstores, publishers, local authors and local literary nonprofits and poetry groups.

The fair will include author panels, live poetry and storytelling, cooking demonstrations and writing workshops.

The festival is open to the public. All proceeds benefit the Art Institute of Palm Springs High School. Be there or be square!

Collector's edition. A much nicer edition than the standard one, which had a few computer-generated typos. This is number 26 of 600 copies signed by the author. This book is in mint unread condition. There is a tiny crease at the bottom right of the cover, too small to show here. This book is now becoming very hard to acquire and very expensive.
